"The Legalization of Marijuana" by Salas

What are some of the strongest elements of this essay? Where are its weak spots?  Overall, did you find Salas' essay persuasive or convincing?

  1. I like that the author explores more than the "health benefits" because that is usually the main argument. He does well, to me, at sticking to his topic and he had a lot of good views. The weakest spot was the presentation of the thesis, but overall it was a very persuasive and eye opening essay.

  2. The author made an interesting point that it might be finacially better to legalize and regulate rather than criminalize and prosecute. Before I would accept finacial benefit as an argument for legalization I would want to know more about costs that may be hidden such as there are with tobacco and alcohol. Would there be more highway costs as accidents happen involving marijana use? Would there be more health care costs as government has incurred with the use of tobacco? Would revenue exceed these costs or would the revenue not be sufficient to offset the personal and government costs as legal marijuana use became common ? I would like to have seen the counter arguments more fully developed in this essay.

i thought that this article was interesting from a law standpoint. the author goes into how much we would save and how much is spent yearly to keep marijuana off the streets and not imported into the united states. but as for the "health reasons" i agree that there is some need for it but mostly it is for recreational use. the amount of time and resources that goes into boarder protection on a drug level would reduce and those recources could be spent otherwise.
